Pietro Yon composed this Italian Christmas carol in 1917. And then Frederick H. Martens set his English carol “When Blossoms Flowered ‘mid the Snow” to this melody. Italian born Yon was an organist who is remembered today for his sacred music for the Roman Catholic Church. When he came to America, he settled in New York City and served as the organist and choir director at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 1927 until his death in 1943.
Pietro Yon is considered among the most important American composers of sacred music for the Catholic Church in the first half of the twentieth century.
While selecting songs for my 1st Christmas album I wanted to record a variety of songs encompassing several genres and style of music. In addition, my mother taught me this song when I was a young girl and it’s one of her favorites. If it’s not already playing, just press the play arrow to listen to my rendition of this Italian Christmas Carol. I hope you enjoy and like! It’s always encouraging to me when you do. Thank you.
This is the Dec. 19 Song Blog from (my) Julie-Ann Joy’s 2020 Christmas Playlist. Check back everyday until New Year’s Day as I add another song to my playlist.
